Musk Says SpaceXAI Will Be Renamed SpaceXSI as Trump Pushes New Term

Elon Musk said SpaceX will rename its AI unit SpaceXAI as SpaceXSI, following the Trump administration’s shift toward “super intelligence” terminology. No effective date or implementation details were announced.

Elon Musk said Sunday, October 4, that SpaceX will rename its artificial-intelligence unit SpaceXAI as SpaceXSI, endorsing the term “super intelligence” promoted by President Donald Trump. Musk made the announcement in a reply on X to a user asking about the proposed name; Reuters reported his response as, “Yes, we will make that change.”

The statement signals an intended branding change, not a completed one. Reuters said SpaceXAI’s X account had not yet changed at the time of its report, and Musk gave no schedule or further details. The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

A proposed rebrand, with timing still unknown

Musk’s reply followed his posts favoring the abbreviation SI over AI. In another post, he described SpaceX as a “super intelligence company.” The exchange did not clarify whether SpaceXSI would become the unit’s formal corporate name, a public-facing brand, or both.

SpaceXAI is the name adopted by Musk’s AI business after SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026. Reuters reported at the time that the deal brought the maker of Grok together with SpaceX, combining Musk’s AI business with his rocket and satellite company. The unit’s prospective second name change in the same year would put the new SI terminology directly into its branding.

Trump’s order applies to executive-branch language

The backdrop is an executive order Trump signed on September 29, titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence.” It directs federal executive departments and agencies, to the maximum extent permitted by law, to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official communications, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents.

The order does not require private companies to change their names. It defines SI for purposes of the order using the existing statutory definition of artificial intelligence, and directs the White House science and technology adviser to submit proposed legislative language for a federal definition within 60 days. The order also says previously issued regulations, presidential actions, contracts, grants and historical documents need not be altered.

SpaceXAI’s place in Musk’s business

The AI operation became part of SpaceX after the February acquisition of xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot. The transaction was presented as a combination of Musk’s space and AI ambitions, linking the rocket and satellite business with AI products. The reported Sunday announcement concerns the unit’s name; it does not announce a new acquisition, product, or change in ownership.

Reuters’ account did not identify changes to products, operations, staffing, or corporate structure resulting from Musk’s proposed rebrand. Nor did it report a filing or formal company announcement confirming that the name has legally or operationally changed. Until the company provides more information, SpaceXAI remains the name used in reporting about the unit and its X account.

What remains to be confirmed

No effective date was given, and it remains unclear when the unit’s website, social accounts, product branding, or other materials might adopt SpaceXSI. The absence of an immediate account change, noted by Reuters, underscores the difference between Musk’s promise to make the change and evidence that it has been carried out.

The federal terminology directive and Musk’s response are related in wording but distinct in scope: the order governs executive-branch documents, while the proposed SpaceXAI rename is a company branding decision. The next confirmation would need to come from SpaceX or from observable changes to the unit’s official identity; neither a timetable nor further implementation details were provided in the reports available Sunday.
