Taiwan’s benchmark stock index surged to a record close on Monday, October 5, as the TAIEX added 1,236.30 points, or 2.55%, to finish at 49,712.04. The index opened at 48,574.95 and climbed as high as 49,770.66 during the session, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

The advance extended a rally that has carried the index to new highs in recent sessions. Monday’s rise was broad in several major industry groups, although decliners outnumbered advancers across the full exchange, underscoring that the headline index gain did not represent every listed stock.

Record close followed a steep intraday climb

The TAIEX rose from its opening level throughout the session, reaching a high of 49,770.66 before settling below that peak. Its close of 49,712.04 surpassed the prior session’s 48,475.74, a level recorded on Friday, October 2.

Investing.com’s historical index data showed a 2.46% increase to 49,666.41 on October 5, with a reported high of 49,770.66. That differs from the Central News Agency’s closing figure and percentage; both sets of data show a sharp advance and the same session high. The local agency’s report places the close 1,236.30 points higher than the previous close.

Industrial and petrochemical shares led sector performance

Among the eight broad industry groups tracked in the Central News Agency report, plastics and chemicals gained 4.30%, while electrical machinery and equipment advanced 2.97%. Financial shares rose 0.10%. Several other groups finished lower, including ceramics and glass, down 0.95%, paper and pulp, down 0.94%, and construction, down 0.78%.

The market’s biggest percentage gainers included Nan Ya Plastics, followed by Baolong International, Unitech Printed Circuit Board, King Slide Works and Lien-Mao. The report did not identify a single catalyst for the index’s rise or attribute the advance to a particular company announcement.

Most listed stocks did not rise

Despite the strong gain in the capitalization-weighted benchmark, the Central News Agency reported 366 stocks higher, 646 lower and 98 unchanged at the close. Because the TAIEX is weighted by market capitalization, large constituents can have more influence on its movement than smaller stocks; the divergence between the index and the breadth figures is therefore notable.

Turnover was NT$1.1508 trillion, according to the local agency. The five most actively traded names were AUO, the Unified Taiwan Upgrade 50 actively managed fund, the CTBC Taiwan ESG Sustainability High Dividend ETF, Innolux and United Microelectronics.

Market has added to gains from late September

The index had closed at 48,475.74 on October 2, up 0.25% for that session, and at 48,353.49 on October 1, up 0.86%, according to Investing.com’s historical series. Before Monday’s jump, those gains had followed a mixed stretch that included declines on September 29 and September 24.

The benchmark’s level is closely watched by investors because Taiwan’s listed market includes major semiconductor and electronics companies. Monday’s market-wide data, however, show why a record index level should not be read as evidence that all shares participated: the number of decliners was substantially larger than the number of advancers.

What the session data establish—and what they do not

The available reports establish the index’s closing and intraday levels, trading value, sector performance and market breadth. They do not provide a verified explanation for the rally, detailed foreign-investor flows, or a confirmed event on the calendar that directly drove the session.

As a result, the move is best described by its measurable outcome: the TAIEX reached a new closing high after rising more than 1,200 points, with industrial and petrochemical groups among the stronger sectors. The next trading session will show whether the market can sustain the advance, but Monday’s reports do not establish how investors will respond or identify a specific upcoming catalyst.
