Jaguar Land Rover unveiled its all-electric Type 01 four-door GT in New York on October 6, putting a starting U.S. price of $130,500 on the first production car in the British marque’s planned electric reboot. The launch targets a wealthy luxury-car audience, particularly in North America, as JLR seeks new growth for Jaguar.

The Type 01 has an unusually long bonnet and no rear window; a camera system provides the driver’s rear view. Jaguar describes it as the start of a new generation of vehicles. The company says orders will open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries expected in the second half of that year. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027.

The launch is a bet on a high-priced, distinctive electric car at a time when U.S. enthusiasm for electric vehicles has been more subdued than in some other markets. Jaguar has not disclosed a sales target for the model, so the scale of demand it expects—and how quickly the new strategy might support the brand—remains unclear.

A flagship with a premium price

Jaguar is positioning the Type 01 as a four-door grand tourer rather than a mass-market electric vehicle. Its starting price is $130,500, according to Reuters’ report of the unveiling. JLR has presented the car as a technology-rich flagship, but has not announced a volume forecast alongside the launch.

The design carries forward the dramatic proportions of Jaguar’s Type 00 concept, shown in 2024, including a long front section and a pared-back exterior. The production car’s missing rear window makes a camera-based view necessary. That design decision places a conspicuous styling feature at the center of questions about everyday practicality, though the company has not described it as a compromise.

Jaguar’s U.S. price and North American focus reflect a move toward the luxury end of the market. The company has not said how the Type 01’s pricing will compare across all planned markets, or provided a full market-by-market sales plan.

Electric performance and charging claims

JLR says the Type 01 uses a dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture and an 850-volt electrical system. Its announced specification includes three electric motors, a 118-kilowatt-hour battery and up to 1,030 metric horsepower. Jaguar says the car can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.2 seconds.

The company estimates a U.S. EPA range of up to 400 miles and says a 350-kilowatt rapid charger can add as much as 200 miles of range in 13 minutes. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results; the final verified range and charging performance will depend on applicable testing and conditions.

Those specifications put the launch emphasis on performance and long-distance capability, as well as design. Jaguar has not yet provided a customer delivery date more precise than the second half of 2027, or a detailed breakdown of which versions will be available at launch.

Rebuilding Jaguar while expanding in North America

The Type 01 is the first production model in Jaguar’s new all-electric direction, following a brand relaunch and the unveiling of the Type 00 concept in 2024. JLR’s October 7 announcement says Jaguar is intended to occupy a distinct position alongside Range Rover, Defender and Discovery within the parent company’s brand portfolio.

JLR says it is targeting double-digit growth over five years, with North America identified as a priority market. It also says Jaguar will be its all-electric brand, while other parts of the group will retain a mix of combustion, hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. The company has not published a Jaguar-specific growth target or disclosed how many models will follow the Type 01 and when.

The launch comes as the wider automotive industry contends with pressure from lower-priced Chinese electric vehicles, trade costs and uncertainty over EV demand. Reuters reported that those pressures have weighed particularly on Europe’s automotive sector. A high starting price may help Jaguar distinguish the car as a luxury product, but the company has not provided evidence of expected U.S. orders or reservations.

UK production planned for 2027

JLR says the Type 01 will be built at its Solihull operations in England, using the dedicated Jaguar electric platform. The company says electric drive units and battery packs will be made in Wolverhampton, while pressed body panels will come from Halewood, Merseyside. Production is due to start in 2027, with order books opening early that year.

JLR said work on the production lines was at an advanced stage. It also reported that, since announcing a five-year investment program of £15 billion to £18 billion in 2024, it had invested £11.5 billion in engineering, design and manufacturing for its next generation of vehicles, with most of that investment spent in the UK.

The next measurable milestones are the opening of orders and the start of production, followed by customer deliveries expected in the second half of 2027. Jaguar has not announced a production volume, detailed reservation totals or a forecast for how much the Type 01 will contribute to JLR’s growth plans.
